The combination of a low pressure system in the south of the Tasman Sea and strong south westerly winds create a much larger than normal swell that brings big seas to the NSW coast. They say these might have been the biggest for 30 years - up to 9 metres at some beaches - but I'd be surprised if that was the case at Bondi. The beach was closed and nobody - even the most intrepid - ventured out. The first photo here is from Waverley Council's website - I was too stupid to get some shots from ground level!
